Any person working inside or outside the Army, Navy, and Air Force are required to complete a personal statement detailing any past activities involving intelligence  collection, clandestine activities, or political activities, but are not required to report past training, or participation with foreign military intelligence. The only exception is any person who has been assigned to a Foreign Intelligence unit or overseas operations, and does not know of the existence of such an intelligence unit or overseas operations. The SF 86 will also include an “OR” section for the officer on duty at the time of the check, the officer's address, and  the place of duty. The form is completed by the individual in the presence of a Government Official. The individual should:  Sign the form using Secure Touch Fingerprint Paper (FTP). Do not sign your name.

I'm coming in as open electronics, and some of those jobs eventually will require secret or top secret clearance. There are three levels of security clearance when you come in to the Air Force or after you've given your recruiter your sf-86, which is your application to join. They do a background check on you, including criminal history and credit report. If you pass that, you're given a basic clearance. Everybody gets that clearance, unless you're a murderer or have some felonies. Above that, you have secret and top-secret clearance. At least, that's what I've heard and read. I go with secret, top secret, and top secret area 51 as the most extreme case. Secret clearance is kind of up in the air; you really don't know. But some jobs in the open electronics category will require secret clearance, like some desk jobs and role jobs dealing with computers, databases, and information. Because of that, I assumed I got my security clearance before BMT to expedite the process.
